Fire in a Box · Lesson 01
Modern Fire Behavior
Do you understand what you fight—or can you just name its visible parts?
This class starts with the statement that a “room and contents fire” is really just a “fire in a box.” The fire environment inside a box is different from an open fire: it is starved for oxygen but full of energy.
We'll look at how oxygen availability, smoke production, the ideal gas law, heat release rate, and heat transfer affect the fire-in-a-box environment.
The interactive discussions and presentation use everyday examples and a quirky character-based hydrocarbon story to open a conversation about chemistry. The aim is to connect what we observe with the processes behind it.
Inside the conversation
- Combustion, pyrolysis, and the role of oxygen.
- Heat transfer, fuel configuration, and fire growth.
- Smoke, gas expansion, and fire growth and transition.
Bring it to the kitchen table
At a fire, a competent firefighter can tell you what they see; a proficient firefighter can explain what they see; but one who has mastered the craft can tell you what comes next.
