Fire in a Box · Lesson 03 · Fire Attack
Dynamic Fire Engagement
Beyond the solid stream vs. fog nozzle debate, let’s talk nozzle science.
This class examines the relationship between science, technique, and experience. We'll look at fire suppression variables like nozzle choice, pattern selection, GPM, and water application techniques. This class explores attacking the fire in a box by assessing the effects we are trying to achieve inside the box.
Inside the conversation
- Nozzle choices and the assumptions behind them.
- Energy absorption, steam, and changing compartment conditions.
- The distinction between gas cooling and surface cooling.
- Water placement, ventilation coordination, and reassessment.
This course brings it together with hands-on demonstrations and classroom presentations that fuel the group discussions. We'll explore different fire attack options with the goal of understanding why we are doing it that way.
The modern firefighter battling a fire in a box must be smarter. You can no longer assume, “Just do it the way you learned it and you'll be safe.” Let's learn it, understand it, and choose a technique based on fire conditions in the box.
Bring it to the kitchen table
- Have you thought about attack techniques beyond aggressively applying what someone taught you when you were new?
- Should there be a universal fire attack method taught in the U.S.?
- Do you have a favorite nozzle or attack technique?
- Can you justify your attack techniques beyond the “well, it works” defense?
